In many high schools, history and science are required courses. Some people argue that in modern society, science and technology are more important than history. In my opinion, while science is essential, it cannot surpass the significance of history. Here are some reasons.

Firstly, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, cultural identity grows ever more crucial - particularly for young people. For example, in China, children learn about the splendid ancient history, including the remarkable achievements of their ancestors such as the Four Great Inventions. When they mature, they are more likely to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their country, as they recognize themselves as part of a distinguished civilization.

Secondly, history is a treasure left by our ancestors that helps shape our character and worldview. Every step of human progress, every technological advance, every war, or pandemic from the past provides us with inspiration and broader perspectives. When facing personal challenges, one can seek advice from parents or friends, but these supports are limited. History, in contrast, acts as a wise elder offering timeless guidance. For instance, the poetry of Su Shi, a renowned Chinese poet, has inspired countless people with its optimism. We often say that everything changes, yet some fundamental truths and noble ideas remain constant across time.
Admittedly, science and technology are indispensable. Electricity revolutionized life a century ago, the Internet turned the world into a global village fifty years ago, and today, AI is transforming every aspect of daily life. In modern society, we can hardly function without technology. However, all technological power must be guided wisely. Nuclear weapons, for example, are so destructive that they must be placed under the control of ethical leadership.

In conclusion, history holds greater importance than science and technology. Through the study of history, people gain not only valuable experience but also a deeper sense of humanity and ethical guidance.
