The current crisis in public conversation stems from firm convictions where people shout at each other without listening, largely due to the atrophy of good argumentation skills. We tend to engage in arguments based on instinct or defensiveness, rather than conscious effort, which ultimately erodes our faith in the value of disagreement. Bo Seo, a two-time world debate champion, contends that we must restore confidence in the potential of disagreement to be a source of good. Based on his experience overcoming communication barriers, he proposes the RISA framework for choosing arguments wisely: ensuring the disagreement is Real, Important, Specific, and that both parties are Aligned in their objectives for having the conversation. In personal settings, such as family gatherings, RISA helps by encouraging us to name what we are disagreeing about and why we are engaging, establishing a "contract" to prevent the dispute from becoming an unruly mess. Furthermore, debate teaches that listening is an active process; you must understand the opponent's argument at its strongest version—even building it up—so they feel heard and the quality of the conversation improves. Finally, wise debaters practice "Side-Switch Exercises," forcing themselves to articulate the best arguments for the opposing side. This exercise pauses certainty and fosters humility and empathy, which are critically needed to discuss difficult ideological and political issues in humane and productive ways.
