FDI is especially common among large, resourceful companies with substantial international operations. For example, many European and U.S. firms have invested in China, India, and Brazil to establish plants to manufacture or assemble products, taking advantage of low-cost labor or natural resources in these countries. At the same time, companies from these rapidly developing economies have begun to invest in Western markets. In 2012, for example, the Haier Group from China acquired New Zealand’s appliance manufacturing company Fisher & Paykel.
