Western Disturbances are low pressure markings that originate from the Mediterranean Sea and reach India after crossing Turkey Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Jet streams play an important role in bringing Western Disturbances to India. Their frequency increases in the months of November and May. The average frequency of these Western Disturbances is in November and May and to April. These disturbances bring light rain which is beneficial for Rabi crops. Human efficiency also increases with the arrival of western disturbances. After the disturbances in the winter months, cold wave comes in northern and central India. These cold waves and subsequent fog and frost are harmful to sugarcane, vegetable and fruit gardens. In the condition of this cold wave, there is a bad effect on the crops. As a result, vegetables, flower gardens, sugarcane and standing rabi crops suffer heavy damage due to cold wave and widespread frost on the land. Frost causes heavy damage to the crops of northern Punjab.
It lasts for 10-12 days in December, January and February. The incidence of frost is less in the southern and eastern parts of this region. The temperature at which the air cools and becomes saturated is called dew point. When the dew point of the air is less than the freezing point, frost is formed. Thus frost is formed when water vapor changes directly from a gas to a solid without becoming a liquid. Very small ice particles collect on the surface. A crisis occurs when a body of cold air moves over an area or when the radiation is cold enough at night. The cold wind mass causes extensive damage to standing rabi crops, vegetable and flower gardens. The Indian Meteorological Department provides weather forecast from time to time to the farmers to adopt conservation measures. Irrigation and water sprinkling reduce the damage caused by frost in the fields. The temperature can be raised to about 5 by using a heater in the vase. In the valleys where the cold air freezes, especially in the agar fields of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the effect of frost can be seen to a great extent. Therefore, while setting up flower gardens and tea gardens, this type of valleys should be avoided. ENSO is an acronym for El Nino and Southern Oscillation. The Southern Oscillation is the reversal of airflow between generally low atmospheric pressure over the western Pacific and normal high pressure over the eastern Pacific. This inversion is caused by the arrival of El Nino.
