Introduction World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June with great seriousness and awareness all over the world. The day was established by the United Nations in 1972 and first celebrated in 1973. Its main purpose is to highlight the importance of environmental protection draw attention to global environmental challenges and motivate people to find solutions to these problems. It reminds us that our survival directly depends on the health of the Earth and its ecosystem. Importance of Environment and Current Challenges Our environment is everything that surrounds us air water soil plants and all living creatures. It provides us with all the basic resources necessary for life pure oxygen to breathe clean water to drink, fertile land to grow food, and materials for shelter and clothing. Nature gives us not only physical resources but also mental peace and beauty. However the development of modern civilization and the uncontrolled expansion of human activities have put severe pressure on our fragile ecosystem.
Smoke emitted from industrial units vehicles and burning of fossil fuels is making the air poisonous. This is directly affecting human health, increasing respiratory diseases and other serious problems. Chemical waste from industries excessive use of pesticides in agriculture and untreated urban sewage are contaminating rivers lakes and groundwater. This is causing shortage of drinking water and endangering aquatic life.  Due to the pressure of increasing population and urbanization, forests are being cut down on a large scale to make way for agricultural land, housing and industrial development. This is not only destroying precious biodiversity but also accelerating climate change by reducing the absorption of carbon dioxide. The Earths temperature is constantly rising due to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. This results in melting ice in polar regions, rising sea levels, and unpredictable changes in weather patterns making natural disasters such as extreme heat droughts floods and storms more frequent and intense. The excessive use and improper disposal of single-use plastics has become a global crisis. Plastic waste is choking our oceans harming marine life and entering the food chain as microplastics with long-term consequences that are still not fully understood.
World Environment Day is not just a symbolic day it is a reminder that we stand at a turning point where our decisions will determine the future of our planet. We must understand that a healthy environment is the foundation of a healthy and prosperous human future. If we do not protect our planet our future generations will face serious and irreversible consequences. Let us take a pledge on this occasion that we will respect nature, use its resources responsibly and wisely and keep it clean and green. This is the time to do act and not just talk. We have to build a future where development and environmental protection go hand in hand, where man and nature live in perfect harmony. Earth is our mother and it is our utmost duty to protect it.
