Corruption is a word made up of two words- corrupt and achar. The word corrupt has many meanings deviating from the path, demoralized and bad conduct and conduct means character, behavior, or behaviour. In this way corruption means unfair treatment and conduct. In the broadest sense, it refers to such an unfair act or behavior by a person, which he does in a selfish manner while taking advantage of his position in order to obtain economic or other benefits. In this, the person willfully neglects the prescribed duty for the benefit of the personality, directly or indirectly. Corruption is not new in India. Evidence of this is also found in historical texts. Chanakya has also mentioned various types of corruption in his book Arthashastra. Today corruption has spread its feet in the fields of religion, education politics administration, arts, entertainment, sports etc. Taking bribe adulteration of food items profiteering, unethical money-collection disobeying laws to fulfill ones self-interest are such forms of corruption which are prevalent in our country. According to a recently released report by Transparency International, an independent international body that assesses the state of corruption in various countries, India ranks high in the list of 178 countries. This means that our country is one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Today, the desire for money has increased in every class, for this it does not hesitate to adopt an unfair path. There are many reasons for corruption these include poverty unemployment, wide scope of government work, inflation, expansion of bureaucracy red tape, low wages, administrative apathy delay in punishing the corrupt illiteracy excessive competition ambition junior officers of senior officers. But pressure etc are the main ones.
Due to corruption, where there has been moral and character degradation of the people on the other hand the country has also suffered economic loss. Today as a result of corruption a large amount of black money has accumulated with the officials and the business class. Due to this black money there has been an increase in immoral trade, alcoholism prostitution smuggling and other crimes. Due to corruption, the tendency of people to run away from their responsibility has increased. In the country instead of community interests, individual and local interests are being given importance. The entire society is in the grip of corruption. Government departments have become focal points of corruption. Employees do not miss to take undue advantage as soon as they get the opportunity.
