The sun of freedom rose on the horizon of Mother India and our own government came to power. New life arose in India after ages of sleep but independence brought with it immense sorrow and pain for the people of Punjab Sindh and Bengal. Many men women and children fell prey to the communal frenzy that had spread throughout the country at that time. In the infancy of independence our country had to face very difficult and complex problems. The country was partitioned and millions of people were rendered homeless. Our government had to rehabilitate them. At the same time Pakistan made tribal people attack Kashmir while Kashmir was merged with India and became a part of India. The princely states of Hyderabad revolted against our government. Other kings and emperors also made efforts to form independent states. But thank God that with the help of our great leaders all these difficulties got removed. The first achievement of independent India was to collect the various units of the country and to unite the princely states of about kings in the country. He united the country and its people. After the adoption of a new constitution on India was declared a republic country. It assured all its citizens of justice liberty equality and fraternity. In this Hindi was declared as the national language and 18 other languages as the regional language. It also declared that India is a secular state and no person will be discriminated against on the basis of religion race caste or creed. In the last four decades ten general elections have been held on the basis of simple adult suffrage. As a result of the elections held in 1989 governments of the National Front were formed at the Center and in several states. The transfer of power between the Center and the states in a peaceful manner is an indicator of the completely democratic nature of politics in India. India has accepted a great challenge of modern times that is to establish socialism through peaceful and non-violent means.
