Allahabad HC on Saturday expressed displeasure over prosecution not presenting witnesses and evidence on time even in cases involving serious crimes, and sought an affidavit from Uttar Pradesh DGP ex-plaining such approach. If prosecution was not interested in presenting witnesses and completing the trial, an accuses could not be kept in jail indefinitely, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh said. The Court also asked DGP about the steps taken by him as the head of police department to address the issue. If further asked the police Chief if he had fixed responsibility of the guilty police officer or person in any case. HC was hearing the bail plea of an Etah resident, Manoj, who said he had been in jail since 2017, but the prosecution had presented only three witnesses so far. "There is no hope of completion of the trial in near future," he said. The petitioner approached high court after three bail applications filed by him were rejected. Justice Singh sought a report from the presiding officer concerned on the process followed so far, and asked why the trial could not be completed and who was responsible for it.
