The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the Emergency in Mann Ki Baat program and reminded the youth especially of those dark days, was necessary because that oppressive period cannot be forgotten. Not only this, more so because the feudal mentality due to which Emergency was imposed on the country on the night of 25 June 1975, its remnants are still visible. Not only this, but similar conduct is also seen. It cannot be ignored that the way Congressmen came out on the streets and protested fiercely against the decision of Allahabad High Court against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, a glimpse of the same was seen recently when the Enforcement Directorate was questioning Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. A lot of uproar was created by calling this questioning as dictatorship of the Modi government. Such things can only be done by those who consider themselves above the laws and the country. It would be better if such people look within themselves before blaming the Modi government and try to understand the real meaning and importance of democracy. Those who are calling the present situation similar to the Emergency would do well to remember those days when the right to live was snatched away from the people, lakhs of people were thrown into jails and the freedom of speech along with the media was ruthlessly suppressed. Comparing today's situation with the days of the Emergency and accusing the Modi government of adopting dictatorial methods is in a way trying to cover up the atrocities committed during the Emergency. The dark chapter of the Emergency can neither be covered up nor forgotten. The Emergency was a kind of feudalism. Unfortunately, there is no dearth of political parties with feudal mentality even today. Generally, they are the same political parties that not only support the politics of nepotism, but also try to justify it by hook or crook. Just as there can be no place for parties with feudal mentality in democracy, similarly there should be no scope for dynastic parties as well. If Indian democracy has to be strengthened, then the people of the country will have to get rid of nepotistic parties.
