Some people think that there should be a complete ban on all forms of advertising.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is proposed that all forms of advertising should be banned. Despite the benefits this action brings, I contend that this will be to the detriment of both businesses and customers. Therefore, a selective approach towards restriction should be adopted.
Proponents of this notion might argue that advertising has a negative influence on people. It lures people into buying products they do not need, leads to unjustifiable expenses, and encourages harmful habits. They take adverts targeting children, promoting alcohol and gambling websites along with Internet pop-ups that ruin browsing experience as examples that justify the complete ban on advertising.
However, I believe that it would be an unwise course of action if advertising were completely prohibited. Most businesses rely on this tool to raise public awareness, drive sales, and make profits. Taking away the opportunity to advertise their products and services will most likely result in the collapse of these businesses, potentially taking its toll on the economy too.
Not only does advertising aid businesses but it also assists consumers in several ways. Firstly, it informs people what products and services are available in the market. Through advertisements, people discover their latent needs and fulfill them. Secondly, advertising helps people make informed choices. Most ads give important information about the products, such as their quality, function, and advantages. When visiting the supermarket, customers will not struggle to choose from the ocean of options as they know what is what.
Given these advantages of advertising, I would argue that imposing a complete ban is a terrible idea. Rather, there should be a restriction on advertising of detrimental products and services, such as alcohol, fast food, and gambling websites as such prohibition would result in the well-being of the general public.
