In a world filled with expectations and societal norms, allow oneself to think freely.’ In a world where many are expected to behave and think in certain ways, stemming freely from the mind is radical. But it can lead to profound self-understanding. When people follow their whims, they often tap into creativity and new ways of looking at things. And they allow themselves to let ideas run wild, potentially making discoveries they would never make while closely following conventional thought. Being allowed to let their ideas lead them, rather than the other way around, can unleash people’s potential to innovate. It can also help them to notice passions and talents they might never have allowed themselves to develop.

However, acting on these impulses might be a path towards removing a thin layer of sociability, and making the experience of ‘you’ more integral to the experience of ‘me’. Most people are reluctant, for various reasons, to act on an impulse fear of judgment from others, fear of failure, or a long-term reluctance to take on a particular kind of opportunity. And so, they shut off various impulses that they could follow, freeing themselves for the genuine fulfillment that following one’s impulses more often brings. When people start to feel freer to do what they want, without feeling that they are straying from their ‘real selves,’ they often feel happier in an emotional sense. They also start to feel happier in an experiential sense, by getting more gladness and fulfillment in life.

Moreover, indulging one’s thought process can make others encourage to do so. In a society, dominated by a conformity-oriented monoculture, witnessing someone freely thinking their thoughts can empower others to do the same. Powered by the motivation of having found the courage to think for oneself, such ‘thought-followers’ can build momentum toward greater personal autonomy and freedom of expression. As more people start to follow their thoughts without inhibition, culture and society are likely to evolve into a greater sea of creativity and diversity. Allowing one’s thought processes to roam unfettered, in whatever shape or form, is likely to foster a far more dynamic and tantalizing society for all.
