The role of news has always been immense in people's lives. This is mainly because news informs people about current events and helps them stay connected. Despite the benefits it presents, I think that too much reliance on news should be seen as an unfavorable development.

The primary reason why people regard news as important is that it keeps them up-to-date with current affairs. News channels, websites, and papers are in constant hunt for something new, and the moment it occurs, they send their reporters to collect information and present it to the public. Based on the information provided by news outlets, people develop their understanding of the world and make informed decisions. This is why we see people reading newspapers, watching news channels while having breakfast, and subscribing to news websites even if it is not free of charge.

However, the spread of misinformation and sensationalization meant that people could no longer rely on news as it may have adverse effects on their well-being and outlook on the world. The proliferation of fake news, distorted information, and biased media coverage is leading the public to reconsider the role news plays in their lives. Most people have started taking news with a pinch of salt since they know they might be manipulated by the media. In addition, media outlets usually prioritize sensational pieces of news over more important ones because they lead to the attraction of more viewers, the retention of existing ones, and consequently higher ratings. This, however, is causing fearmongering and public anxiety, negatively affecting the mental health of the public.

In conclusion, news indeed has a pivotal role to play in people's lives as it raises people's awareness of current events, issues, and changes. Despite this, I contend that the role of news has become more negative in recent years with the rise in fake and sensational news.
