The term 'Indo-Pacific' is being used increasingly in the global strategic/ geopolitical discourse, though as per Wikipedia the term was first used in a January 2007 article in the IDSA Journal 'Strategic Analysis' titled "Security of Sea Lines: Prospects for India-Japan Cooperation" authored by Gurpreet Khurana. In the article, the term 'Indo-Pacific' refers to the maritime space stretching from the littorals of East Africa refers to the maritime space stretching from the littorals of East Africa and West Asia, across the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Ocean, to the littorals of East Asia. The spirit of the term was picked up by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as reflected in his speech to the Indian Parliament in August 2007 that talked about the "Confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans" as "the dynamic coupling as seas of freedom and of prosperity" in the "broader Asid". From about 2011 onwards, the term has been used frequently by strategic analysts and high-level government/military leadership in Australia, documented articulation of the term first appeared in Australia's Defence White Paper, 2013. It has been argued that the concept of the Indo-Pacific may lead to a change in popular "mental maps" of how the world is understood in strategic terms.
The vast Indian Ocean and Western Pacific are drawn together by natural resource flows, globalized supply chains, and international distribution networks. The waters of the Indo-Pacific region represent and environmental policy action-issues that have transformed the region into an major crossroads of international relations. for centuries the islands and mainland of the Indo-Pacific were simply features of the Indian Ocean thoroughfare. Today, increasing flows of commerce, investment, and people are linking the Indian Ocean and Pacific nations together and to the rest of the world as part of an emerging global trading network. The region has its mix trend towards integration/cooperation and competition. ON one hand forums like the ARF, IORA, ADMM Plus and EAS aim towards building cooperation which send  a strong signal towards regional stability, on the other hand lie historical territorial disputes, especially in the maritime domain the regional flashpoints, which increase the risk of conflict and  competition. Thus, the interplay of overlapping and intersecting interests in the region presents a complex strategic environment characterised by growth and integration as well as potential for destabilising in the region and increasing the vulnerability  due to greater interdependence.
The Indo-Pacific is still emerging as a system which is predominantly maritime with Southeast Asia as its centre. given its diversity and bread sweep, its security architecture is a series of sub-regions and arrangements rather than a unitary whole. It is, however, appreciated that over the next decrease, the security environment around most nations of the region will be significantly influenced by how the Indo-pacific and its architecture evolve.
