The success of any democracy is determined by the integrity of its mandate. And in order to ensure this sanctity, democracies all over the world have made various experiments. The Election Commission of India traveled from ballot paper to EVM and then to VVPAT. Elections, which were once held in one or two phases, are now held in eight-nine phases, so that even marginalized voters can use their franchise fearlessly in this vast democracy. No antisocial element could destroy the sanctity of the mandate. But the irregularities of the system during the five state assembly elections have not only hurt the reputation of the Election Commission, but also hurt the common man's faith in democracy. First the EVM was found in the BJP candidate's car in Assam, then almost twice the total registered voters fell at a polling station in Haflong Assembly constituency and now a Trinamool Congress leader in West Bengal The recovery of EVM and VVPAT from here shows how serious these negligences are. In all these three cases, the Election Commission has suspended the guilty officers concerned, but this should be a matter of grave concern for the Commission, so that no such disturbances will be revealed again in future. Apart from these irregularities, the message of his certain decisions did not go well with the people. Ethics Assam Health Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma was banned from campaigning for 48 hours in the case of code violation and then the ban was reduced to 24 hours the next day. If the complaint against Sarma was not serious, then why was such a step taken against him? We cannot forget that the Commission has earned its credibility only through strict vigils. The work of the Election Commission is very challenging, who can deny it? But compared to the general elections of the country, these are still the assembly elections of five states. The Commission needs to do more work at the level of its supervisors. There is also a need to provide better training to the polling staff. In view of how bitter the election campaign in the country is becoming these days, the Commission will have to strictly implement the code of conduct. The global prestige of Indian elections is a matter of pride for the country, it should be protected. Only a few constitutional institutions such as the High Court and the Election Commission are left on which Indians trust. The responsibility of protecting this trust rests with their actors. Recently, in America, we have seen in the democracy how important is the strength of the institutions from which people gain power.
