NEW DELHI: Mathura district jail has started preparing to hang a woman for the first time in independent India. Shabnam Ali, 38, was convicted of killing seven members of his family his mother, father, two brothers, sister-in-law, cousin and 10-month-old nephew he was murdered by feeding him with milk and a canopy. .
Who is Shabnam Ali
Shabnam lives in Bawankhedi, a village about 20 km from Amroha in Moradabad division of Uttar Pradesh and has double MA in English and Geography.
Before killing his family members, Ali worked as a school teacher, who taught in the village school and was a favorite among his students.
Shabnam’s uncle, Sattar Ali, describes her as a demonic girl, “every bit obedient daughter” whom no one thought was capable of killing her family for her lover.

On the night of April 14 and 15 2008, Shabnam, who was seven weeks pregnant with her lover Salim’s child, intoxicated her family and killed them as they objected to their relationship.
Salim came from a different socio-economic background and caste. Her family, Saifi Muslims, were land-lords, while Salim, a Pathan, was a Class VI dropout, and served as a daily wager.
 
 
Shabnam was in a relationship with Salim, a schoolteacher who acted as a daily bet.
 
Shabnam’s family owned about 30 bighas of land. Her father was an art teacher at a local college.
“We were all shocked. There was some tension in the family due to his relationship with the man, but it was impossible to imagine that it would end that way, ”Sattar said.
India’s first Woman’s death sentence To hang
Shabnam and Salim were sentenced to death in 2010 by a sessions court in Amroha, UP, where they are from.
Over the next 11 years, Shabnam went to the Allahabad High Court, the Supreme Court, the President and then the Supreme Court (SC). In January last year, his review petition was dismissed by the SC.
However, it has not abolished all judicial remedies.
