Dussehra is celebrated all over the country today. This festival has special significance in Hinduism. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the worship of Maa Durga for nine days. There are also many stories related to the festival of Dussehra symbolizing good over evil. According to the legend of Ramayana, Lord Rama killed Ravana on this day. For this reason, Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami. Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami date of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. The festival of Dussehra gives us the message of eliminating the negativity within us, the proof of the victory of untruth over truth.
Dussehra is celebrated by different names throughout the country. Just as Durga Puja and Vijayadashami are celebrated in the east and north east, in the northern, southern and western regions it is known as Dussehra. The soul of the festival of Dussehra, celebrated in different names and forms throughout the country, remains the same, i.e. the victory of religion over unrighteousness.
Durga Puja or Vijayadashami commemorates the slaughter of Mahishasura by Mother Durga. While in Dussehra, the slaughter of Ravana by Lord Rama is celebrated. Ravana defeated Sita, wife of Lord Rama, by deceit. In order to save his wife and destroy evil from the world, Rama killed Ravana on this day. Ramlila is organized in many parts of the country and effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna are lit on the last day i.e. the day when Dussehra takes place. These are symbols of all evil and negativity. And their burning gives the message that truth is always victorious. in some parts of Maharashtra, Mother Saraswati is worshiped on this day. Mother Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and learning. On this day people also worship their means of livelihood. In Gujarat, fasts are kept for the mother for nine days and the Garba dance festival is celebrated. In Bengal, the tenth day of Navratri is celebrated as Vijayadashami. The women play sindoor before immersing the idol of Maa Durga in the water. It celebrates the victory of Maa Durga. Mysore Dussehra is famous all over the country. The Mysore palace is decorated like a bride on this day. After worshiping the mother for nine days in Kullu, Himachal, people get ready to wish each other on the day of Dussehra.
