A nation that has no cultural heritage is like an orphan who has nothing to feed upon. An individual human being, a race or a nation must necessarily have certain roots somewhere. India is deep-rooted in the culture of her past - the glorious past. The traditions, the ideals and the institutions of the past are inherited by us as rich legacy. We may not be proud of our present, but we can hold our heads high in the parliament of nations, when our past history, culture, tradition and ideals are taken into consideration. The fact that waves of foreign invasions, and long periods of subjugation have not been able to seep away and destroy totally our way of life and culture goes to prove the strength and nobility of our achievements in the past.
Indian culture is a happy synthesis of divergent experiences of generations. It has been a powerful all-absorbing and all-embracing process. In the past it has received, adopted and digested elements of different cultures-European, Greek, Roman, Turkish, Persian, etc. In fact each new influence has enriched it and it has emerged a sublime force. India is a land of many people who profess different religions, speak different languages and are guided by different customs and traditions, yet she continues to be a common home for all people, practising a rich unity in the midst of diversity. There are frequent threats to this unity. But India possesses remarkable ability to face these threats successfully.
The charm and graciousness of the Indian way of life endures due to the philosophy of life which we have inherited from the past. Religion in India is not a thing to be put on and put off like Sunday clothes. It permeates the whole fabric of Indian life. Whatever we do, however great or small, is coloured with religious sentiments. From the planting of a tree to the establishing marriage and procreation, birth and death are all tinged with religious fervour. It is true that our attitude towards life is now rapidly becoming materialistic. The glamour of the western way of life with its glorification of material prosperity and its wonderful achievements in the field of science and technology has modified our aims and ambitious.
