An old Sanskrit proverb says, "The mother and the motherland are higher than even heaven".
The aim of education is to produce citizens, who love their country, who are men and women of character and honesty, who practise virtue and goodness and who place the country's good above their own selfish gain and narrow ideas. If education does not do so, it has failed of its real purpose. Mere turning out the graduates, engineers, doctors and other professionals by the thousand is not enough.
We are a great and very ancient nation. We are older than the hills. We were on the top of civilization and culture, in days of yore, when other big nations of today were either not born, or were wallowing in savagery. The American nation is less than 300 years old. For instance, our city of Kashi was their in 1200 B.C.
You should be proud of your country. We should thank God that we have been born in Bharat, rather than in any other land. We should congratulate ourselves on being the citizens of India. England ruled over large parts of the five continents, for two-three hundred years. She once ruled over America, India, Canada, Australia and large parts of Asia and Africa. It was said that the sun never set on the British Empire, all the 24 hours, the sun was shining over some part of the British Empire or other. What was the secret of their great success? The Britishers were patriots to the core. They loved their country more than they loved their own life. They in their ships travelled to the four corners of the globe and planted their country's flag (the Union Jack) for the glory of England. It was said that the Britishers lived and died for their country. Otherwise history finds it strange that a small island (England), 7,000 miles away from us, having  a small population of 4 crores (it is 5 crore now) could rule over the major portion of the world and emerge as the top power of the day. The only secret was their burning patriotism and love of the country, that braved all dangers and won the battles for the glory of their father land.
