We were losing the battle. Our King was old, weak, and could hardly move. He was hiding just outside the castle walls. Of the three soldiers who had been appointed to protect him, two had been killed while on duty and I was left alone.
From where I was standing, I had a good view of the battle. Fortunately for us, our Queen was a young and active woman. tall, dark, and very beautiful, she looks splendid out there on the battlefield with her knights at her side. She had fought with great courage and already killed two enemy officers herself. Since we had lost so many men, it was difficult for her to attack. She, therefore, decided to do all she could to defend the king. I got a shock when I saw a humble enemy soldier threatening her! She came up very close, but her brave knights sacrificed their lives to save her.
Alone now, she was trapped by the enemy, and though she fought hard, she, too..., lost her life. Great numbers of enemy officers and soldiers now descended upon us and soon destroyed the castle. Completely defeated, the King and me tried to run away together, but it was too late. As the King moved up behind me, we heard the words Checkmate. Another game of chess had come to an end.
