Gurur Brahma,GururVishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara Gurur sakshat Parabrahma, tasmayi Sri Gurudev namah While browsing through the pages of an old book I came across a wonderful quote by W B Yeats "Education is not just filling up a pail; it is lighting up a fire !" This reminds me of the teachers of yore who could churn up the cold cinders in the belly and brains of a pupil and many a times the result was a revolution over the world. Most revolutionaries have been bi-products of fiery teachers and strict disciplinarians. There were also those unread, unrecognised or unknown guides, who may have fired up the likes of Swami Vivekananda! One has just followed out of sheer respect, adulation, or love for such a 'Teacher'! The 'Guru', or the Teacher, whether a mother, a father, a relative or an elderly person-noncognisant, is able to get across to the learner - child or youth, and can instill in him a sense of discipline, adaptability, humility and truthfulness, and, may be, while the recipient of such types of guidance grows older, these qualities, imbibed in him, remain ingrained permanently. Academic accumulation of qualifications might not be able to mould the character, attitude or instill in him a vision. The mythical Eklavya is one great example of this! It was his faith and dedication towards his 'Teacher', though physically absent, that he is etched in history as a devout pupil! We can draw a parallel to present trend of teaching 'online' (or without physical presence of the Guru) citing 'Eklavya'. While we grow in age, many instances in our lives prove to be great teachers. It is not the traditional school going learning process. It is practical teaching and learning, which, down the years moulds the person one really grows up to be. The vision, the attitude, the foresightedness and the good and bad experiences, prove to be the real character building tools which ultimately 'makes' the individual in the long length of age called 'Life'!
