The South Horizons Marina Square is surrounded by many residential buildings. It is located in private housing estate, South Horizons. The Marina Square is located in Ap Lei Chau. Ap Lei Chau Island is located southwest of Hong Kong Island which is part of Hong Kong’s archipelagos. The island is shown as in this picture below. The Marine Square consists of two entrances. The west exit and east exit. Once passed through the entrances there is different varieties of shops, food, and others. There are four floors that are in the Marina Square. All floors are in a square-typed shape except for the fourth floor which is sealed in. Some floors have more specific variations of shops than others. For example the fourth floor has mainly restaurants and tutoring classes. While the third floor also has tutoring, food, and medical rooms. The third floor is especially used for the doctors because of the convenience as if they are a resident of South Horizons. This is the entrance and the ground floor of the Marina Square. The place is well maintained and renovated. After surveying residents around (see appendix 1), most people that go into the Marina Square are adults, elderly, and children. Usually adults go in on the weekends to eat food and buy groceries or walk in with their children. The elderly go into the Marina Square is sometimes to accompany children and meet up with someone. The reason children go is either to eat at a fast-food restaurant or go to their tutoring class, children are usually accompanied by either an adult or a nanny/maid. One of the main reasons that people use the Marina Square is to go to buy groceries at Park’n Shop. These people are mainly from the residential buildings in South Horizons. People from the residential buildings go by the Marina Square everyday to buy food to support their families or for their basic needs. Another reason for them to go to the Marina Square is for special events or holiday celebration occasions. Last years mid-autumn festival was a special one. Some people organized a counter to give away free moon cakes made by Saint Honours Bakery. Park’n Shop has gift wrapping when holiday celebrations occur. For example Christmas, Chinese New Year, Halloween, and many other major celebrations. The people that live in South Horizons usually go to the Marina Square in the early morning to eat food at McDonalds, Cafe De Coral, Starbucks, and many other restaurants. This is a convenience for everyone that lives nearby so people that need to go to work in the early morning can go to the Marina Square and eat their breakfast then head off to work. There is also a church in the Marina Square for Baptists. There are many religious people in South Horizons. On another entrance is a place to the sports center. The Marina Square provides courts for tennis, basketball, badminton, ping-pong, and many other sports. The residents are given an opportunity to save hassle to go to further places in Hong Kong Island to play sport. The responsibilities of the people apply to the general rules that are in the residential apartments. They are not allowed to have pets because it will cause disturbance to the others, there is only an exception if it is a guide dog. Bicycles, scooters and skateboards are forbidden in the Marina Square because it is a mall and using bicycles, skateboards and scooters may affect the safety of the users. Activities that are disturbing are not allowed in the Marina Square. Littering is prohibited in the Marina Square, people who litter may be fined. The responsibility of the South Horizons managers is to maintain the area and keep it in order. The purpose of the managers is to also establish the laws to make everything go in order. The managers are the ones that enforce security to ensure the safety of the users in the whole area of South Horizons. Smoking is also prohibited in the Marina Square to ensure safety and to not bother anyone inside the Marina Square and cause the air to smell foul. The place is accessible from most types of transportation. When exiting out of the Marina Square there are parking lots for private cars to come by and park their cars. There is also many different buses to go to different areas as some people may prefer public transportation to the place.The Marina Square is very convenient to those who can take public transportation and private cars. But usually the people that go to the Marina Square is usually accessed by the residents in South Horizons. Other people that are living outside South Horizons do not usually come. There are varieties of people coming in and out of the South Horizons Marina Square. There are no restrictions on whether the skin colour, age, background info e.t.c. There are no advertisements of some sort to persuade people to come to the Marina Square. The purpose of the space was well used because it was mainly focused on one task to provide people with their facilities so people can come in and use them. Such as the fast-food place called Cafe De Coral, and bakeries like 85c and V8 Bakery. The most common reason someone is going there is either to use the facilities or cross over to the other half of the Marina Square through the bridge or some other way. This space has provided many different facilities for the majority of the community to use. It has a range of facilities from medical centers to foods and many other shopping outlets of sorts. It has delivered and provided the community with the necessary needs of the residents and people that come and drop by.The place is welcoming because of the amounts of people going in and out. Its design is also unique from others and makes it like it is a new presentation of the Marina Square. There is no obstruction and vandalization in the Marina Square. All of the people are very respectful to the area provided to them and they use it by the rules that are placed. The Marina Square is maintained from time to time and the materials that are used to support the building is still working and sustaining the building’s interior. They usually renovate some specific things in the marina square after every year. The Marina Square did not have any water fountains for decorations, but all the other things that the Marina Square did provide was enough to balance out the decorations and environment. There are washrooms on 2 floors in the Marina Square. The second floor and the fourth floor. These washrooms are placed in good places that are suitable for people to come around and walk into the toilets if they need to use the washrooms. The one that is placed on the second floor is made into a very open area for people to get to the washroom. On the right hand side is an exit to go outside or take the bridge to the next part of the Marina Square. The fourth floor washroom is right next to McDonalds which is a very famous fast-food restaurant. So many people will drop by and they might need to wash their hands to eat. There is also tutoring classes next to the washroom so kids can drop by quickly go to the toilet and get into their scheduled class. Unfortunately, there were no handicap ramps for the old aged and disabled. This is very common in Hong Kong to not have one. But many overseas malls or parks may have them because their environment is different. Hong Kong’s environment is all about using space effectively due to the massive population in Hong Kong. That’s why there may be no handicap ramps and only escalators to get to the next floor. They did not have any picnic areas and barbecue pits, but they do have benches and tables for people to sit in the restaurants. Most of the time people sit down in the restaurants or areas to walk around then rest at the facility to have a drink or take a snack. In the middle of the Marina Square on the ground floor. There is an area for booths, promotional items, and holiday celebration occasions. This is a great opportunity for many people to come by and talk with each other during the special occasion and at the same time participate in whatever entertainment or leisure they provide. As mentioned before McDonalds is a common place for fathers and mothers to wait for their kids after they have finished their tutoring lessons. Also on the ground floor many people use the Marina Square as a central location to meet people when they arrive in South Horizons. There are many different types of people that come in the South Horizons Marina Square. Some people have some professions that are quite unique and special people that are in charge of very important companies. Everyone can meet and talk whether its an old aged person, child, adult e.t.c. Residents of South Horizons often go to the Marina Square to talk with people and talk about what happened in the last week or previous days. The residents in South Horizons basically depend on the Marina Square itself. Because of its variety of facilities for everyone to use, it provides them with the food they eat. The classes for their children and the other necessities that they want. The public space has a variety of facilities for people to use and the special events that happen every week or so gives them many options of what they want to do. Either go shopping around and see what products they have to sell, or sit down and eat some food.
