French test

Post by VinceMiller » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:09 am

Hi, I've been taking more French tests than usual lately and I found out there's something wrong with this test. I recorded a video where I get 146 wpm in French with 6 wrong words, however and as you can see in the video I only make 2 typos. I believe it has something to do with the "^" and "ç" characters, everytime I type a word with this character it counts it as a typo at the end of the test... Hope you can sort this out?

Hi Vince,

Firstly, thank you for the information and your video. There has already been an issue before with some French accents and characters, and I thought it was fixed but it's clear that a problem still persists.

I counted that you typed 137 words, of which 2 incorrect (in red below). So your results should be: 135/2 and not 132/6. Here is the word list of your test:

The first weird thing is that your result counts a total of 138 words (132 + 6) instead of 137 ... Besides, there are 4 wrong words in excess and you lost 3 correct words.

Remains to determine what causes each of these things.

In your test there was no "ç". But there were some special words that I bolded above.

This could come from one or more of these words, but to be sure we should test them one by one. It's also possible that the problem comes from something else. I just hope it's not a completely random and impossible to reproduce bug.

I will do some tests and post a report here.

Well, I tested all the special French words one by one, which are:

à, âme, après, ça, connaître, côté, déjà, être, frère, là, même, où, père, répondre, tête, très

I had no problems with my results. :|

Hi Linsk, thanks for dedicating a bit of your time to this matter.

In the case of "ç", I know this time there wasn't any "ç", however, whenever I take a test and there's this character and I type it, every single word onwards is counted as a wrong word and it happens all of the times I type it, and since nobody else claims such an error I suppose I'm probably one of a very few who has this problem, so it's not a general fact at all.

About the 137 instead of 138, it could be because of the last word I typed right in the last second, which was incomplete, so it could explain why there are 6 wrong words. Let's suppose that whenever "^" is typed, it is counted as a wrong word so "connaître", "même" and "côté" would be counted as 3 wrong words plus my real mistakes "rue" and "père" and this last incomplete word = 6 wrong words? ... Anyway I'm just saying

Oh, by the way, I'm afraid this "ç" issue is also happening with the Catalan test :/. I will take a few tests as soon as I have some time and I'll give you the details.

Thansk a lot =)

PD: just read your last entry...ROFL :C
PD2: You know? I'm going to take a few tests in Mozilla, it might be probably cause of Google Chrome?

It's really weird ... I use Chrome too, like many other users. Indeed, it looks like a very isolated issue.

You've always had this problem or only these last few days?

I thought it was only a Chrome issue, however, I took a test in Catalan with Mozilla and had the same problem with the "ç". I am wondering whether it is something related to my keyboard, cause it's been happening ever since I got this new one :/

I counted four corrected words and two wrong words. Maybe those corrected words were wrongly registered as incorrect words giving a total of six? Of course, it could just be a coincidence and some testing has to be done do verify or exclude this possibility.

Edit:

Corrected words: non-pour-tenir-vieux
Wrong words: rue-père

The combined total of these six words including space gives 30 keystrokes, while the result shows 34 incorrect keystrokes, so this doesn't seem to be the problem. But there's a general bug for some languages causing many more wrong words than actual mistakes made during the test. It could be a variation of that bug.
