qbZ, you're just too quick... How will I ever get the Norwegian record with you on the site? Not that I have a shot at it yet...

Dutch - 194 WPM. Exceeding that 200 WPM threshold is becoming a real possibility now. :)

Schollie, I wonder how you got these phenomenal speeds in English and Dutch. You recorded over 190 WPM in both languages. The only other 10FF users who got at least 3 WPS (180 WPM) in two different languages are qbZ (French: 196 WPM, English: 180 WPM) and Kukkain (English: 199 WPM, Portuguese: 193 WPM).

What's your mother tongue and where do you come from?

Thank you! I started typing from a very early age, when my father gave me an old typewriter. I was 4 or 5 years old at the time (I'm 23 now). It was the coolest thing I had ever gotten and I spent a lot of time typing on it, so I quickly learned all the keys and became better and better at it. Although I only used my two index fingers, it didn't take me very long to become almost as fast as my father, who used all ten fingers and could type blindly, which I greatly admired. When I was about 12 years old, I learned to type using all my fingers on a real computer with some typing software my parents gave me. This was relatively easy to me, since I already knew the keyboard layout and it was just a matter of getting used to typin with all of my fingers. Over the next couple of weeks, my typing speed skyrocketed. Even though I never measured it back then, I think I must have been able to type at 600 or 700 characters per minute by the time I was 14 (I didn't start thinking in terms of WPM until I joined this site).

I was also 4 years old when I started playing the piano, which definitely helped me tremendously to achieve these typing speeds. I was tutored quite vigorously until the age of 17 and became really good at it (although when thinking back about it, I still get the same nervous feelings as I used to get back then, right before going to piano classes). My teacher was the strictest ever, but she taught me well, and, in retrospect, I'm glad my parents put me through it. :P There is something I've been meaning to ask, by the way! Do any of you guys who can type really fast (Impermanence, qbZ, etc.) or are generally interested in typing, play a musical instrument?

I live in Belgium and my native language is Dutch, and I also speak French and some German (those are our 3 official languages). I'm pretty sure that, with practice, I can get +180 WPM in French too (although breaking qbZ's record won't be happening any time soon, if at all :P ). German would be more difficult, since there is no way to quickly type "¨" on an azerty keyboard, as there is for "é", "è" and "à".

I type on a regular laptop keyboard, and some people tell me that I should buy one of those mechanical keyboards with special keys, as this is supposed to make you even faster. I'll probably make the purchase as soon as I have some money to spare (I'm still a student). An additional reason for me to buy a real keyboard is that, for some reason, my laptop keyboard doesn't always register the "g" at the end of words correctly, so words like "something" and "thing" will often look like "somethin" and "thin" (even when typed correctly) and therefore counted as incorrectly typed. If this wouldn't be the case, my WPM would be even higher by a few. :)
