You must have already learned in previous class that Microsoft Excel can do basic calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You must have also understood that Excel does all the calculations by using the important rule of mathematics BODMAS (Bracket of Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction). In this chapter, you shall use Excel for doing some advanced calculations to uncover the real power of Excel. Do you know that Excel has in-built formulae and functions that may simplify and speed up the calculation process? By using these inbuilt functions, you shall learn to calculate mean, median, mode and range. You may also create your own formulae by using which you shall learn to calculate: Area, Perimeter, Profit and Loss, Simple Interest, etc. You must have studied about all these topics in your Mathematics class. Now, let us move further and study about these topics with reference to computers. But first thing is first. Let us start with understanding the basic concepts.
Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
We use the mean, median; mode and range for obtaining information of average Val-use, middle values, repetitive values, maximum and minimum values on a list of values, Mean, median and mode are all types of averages and each works in the best way with different types of situations. Let us look at their definitions. Mean is the most common type of average and it generally refers to the arithmetic mean. The arithmetic mean is a simple type of average. Suppose you want to know your average score on the Maths class tests. Let us say the marks you scored were 80, 90, 92, and 78 in the four tests in which you had appeared in the last term. For finding your average score, add up the four scores:
Then divide that answer by the number of scores that you started with, which is 4:
Therefore, your average score or mean score for maths tests is 85 (during the last term).
Remember: Whenever you want to find mean, simply add up all the values and divide the sum by the number of values that you started with. Let us consider another set of numbers 80, 90, 90, 100, 85, 90. There could be your computer science test marks! Add up the numbers and divide by how many numbers are there:
Thus, we find that in this case 89.16 is the mean.
Median is the number in the middle when the numbers are listed in order. For explaining median lets us take a question, what is the median salary for employees? For example, salaries for nine employees are?
For finding the median, first arrange the values in the given list in ascending order i.e. from the lowest to the highest, and after that find the number which is exactly in the middle: Now which vale is in the muddle? Well, there are nine numbers, therefore the middle one is the fifth, which is 16000, and hence 16000 is the median.
Let us consider another set of values. In this case, the list has even number of values. How would you calculate the median in this case? Here, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers. So, in this case, the two middle numbers are 30 and 45. Their mean is Thus, is the median. The range is the difference between the lowest and the highest values. In the second example of median which is mentioned above, the range is Data with lire ranges tend to be more spread out.
Using Excel to compute Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Max, and Min &Count
Using Excel to compute mean, median, mode, range, max, min, count Follow the directions that are given below on how to calculate mean, median, mode, range, max, mind, and count by using Excel. You can type and use your own data or download the dataset sued in this book from the book set www. Miks. Com Open Excel. Label cell as per the data you have. For example, our data is T4est Scores; so, our column is labeled Test Scores. Put your in column (starting from cell to cell), under Test Scores. In the cell, type Average Test Score. Fill computer column with the test as shown. After you have finished doing this, your spreadsheet will look like the sample which has been given below:
